It was launched on May 11, 2018, by SpaceX on a Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The satellite provides a range of telecommunications services, such as television and radio broadcasting, internet access, and data transmission for Bangladesh and neighboring countries including India, Pakistan, and Nepal. It also has a dedicated transponder for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries.
The satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space, a French-Italian aerospace manufacturer, and is operated by the Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited (BCSCL).The satellite is expected to have a lifespan of 15 years.
It has a total capacity of 40 transponders in the Ku-band and 14 transponders in the C band. The satellite is named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh.
